The region Auvergne Rhône Alpes is one of the biggest of France with a surface of 69 711 km² (43316 miles²).

There are approximately 7 820 966 Inhabitants.

The department of Cantal has an area of 5726 km² and 146 618 inhabitants.

It is a very beautiful region with green landscapes but also for its gastronomy.

Cantal is one of the department of Auvergne Rhône Alpes (postcode number 15) and the prefecture is the city of Aurillac. There are around 26 135 inhabitants in Aurillac.

Our school is located in Saint Flour ; Saint Flour is the subprefecture of Cantal.

That city represents 6 643 inhabitants called SANFLORAINS.

The upper city (ville haute) of Saint-Flour is located on the abrupt volcanic dike Planèze, the lower city (ville basse) extends on the banks of the Ander river.

Sightseeing and entertainments in Auvergne and in Cantal

A place of spectacular natural beauty, the Auvergne countryside is a relaxing retreat in rural France. Even though Auvergne is a popular French vacation destination, the region's tourism industry is less developed than other areas of France.

This unspoiled region has two of France's largest nature reserves: the Regional Park of Volcans d'Auvergne with its dramatic volcanic cones and the Regional Park of Livradois-Forez with its diverse flora and fauna.

Admire Monts du Cantal (1855 m) and the Monts Dore (Sancy 1885 m), the plateau of Cézallier and its varied landscapes, the Puy Mary (1783 m) with wide open spaces and forested valleys.
There are many walks and hikes in our region that you can do by foot, by bike or by ski or on horseback in the winter

It is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers, Auvergne's regional parks offer opportunities for fishing and other active sports too.

Volcanoes of Auvergne

Plomb du Cantal (1855 m), Mont Dore with the Sancy (1885 m) and the most recent (less than 10000 years) the chaine des Dômes, 112 volcanoes lined up on 30km with the Puy de Dôme (1465 m), where you can go to the top by car (toll road).

Vulcania, the scientific Leisure park dedicated to the volcanology, located at 90 km, near Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne).

The lakes

Godivelle Haut et Bas, MontCineyre, Bourdouze, Lac Pavin, Chauvet, La Landie, Cregut and further towards the Sancy: Chambon, Guéry, Servière, Aydat.
Each lake has its own special charm and just going around will be a lovely walk !
